Christianity Christ as a Pentagram, from Valeriano Bolzani's Hieroglyphica (Basel, 1556)The pentagram is used as a Christian symbol for the five senses,[10] and if the letters S, A, L, V, and S are inscribed in the points, it can be taken as a symbol of health (from Latin salus).[citation needed] Medieval Christians believed it to symbolise the five wounds of Christ. The pentagram was believed to protect against witches and demons.[11] The pentagram figured in a heavily symbolic Arthurian romance:[11] it appears on the shield of Sir Gawain in the 14th century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. As the poet explains, the five points of the star each have five meanings: they represent the five senses, the five fingers, the five wounds of Christ,[12] the five joys that Mary had of Jesus (the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Resurrection, the Ascension, and the Assumption), and the five virtues of knighthood which Gawain hopes to embody: noble generosity, fellowship, purity, courtesy, and compassion. Probably due to misinterpretation of symbols used by ceremonial magicians, it later became associated with Satanism and subsequently rejected by most of Christianity sometime in the twentieth century.[11]

A pentagram can mean many things. Primarily it is the Wiccan religious symbol if it's inscribed in a circle (like the cross is to Christianity).
It can also represent the five elements spirit, air, water, earth, and fire (spirit being the top point, air and water being in the middle and earth and fire being on the bottom).
Some also hold it as a goddess symbol.
If you invert it and add an image of a goat's head inside it, it's called a baphomet and is the religious symbol of Satanism.

It's a star in a circle. Always with 5 points (one pointing upward), each has its own meaning. The upward point of the star is representative of the spirit. The other four points all represent an element; earth, air, fire, and water.
To wear a pentagram in say a tattoo, says that you feel the connection with the elements and respect the earth.

The five point star has been a symbol of protection for as long as humans have passed down stories of the spiritual. Though some Christians try to pervert it into a symbol of evil, the pentagram is shown behind the head of their God aspect Jesus in many old paintings and Icons.
If you want the Truth.....Ask a Pagan.

Standard 5 pointed pentagram is the elements including spirit and the center is the sorceror / magi or perhaps the beast / dragon. A eight pointed star is representation of Algol / Chaos.

A pentagram is any graphic (drawn, written) representation of five lines, regardless of direction. A pentacle is a three dimensional representation thereof. (in general... A pentacle can also have a diagram of a hexagram or octogram)
The pentagram on that person's hand could mean anything from Wicca to personal rebellion.

a lot of people may try to tell you its satanic, but its not. it can be sometimes but more often than not it isnt. it is usually considerd to stand for the four elements, earth, fire, air, and water, and the fifth point at the top stands for the human spirit or the god or goddes depending on who you talk to. if you want to cover it with a heartagram, go ahead. that is your choice. if it makes you feel more comfortable then do so by all means.

A pentagram is just a five-sided star. A pentacle is a five-sided star inside a circle. Both just mean that the person is a proud devotee of Earth-based spirituality. It is NOT a sign of someone who worships "Satan!" In fact, Satan was a creation of Judeo/Christian spirituality, both very young religions compared to Paganism. And, no, Pagans are NOT evil! Generally, they're just happy tree-hugging hippies. :) And even if the person is dressed in Gothic/Industrial looking clothes, it doesn't mean anything. They might just be trying to express their own creativity. There are SO many misconceptions about Earth-based religions.

"A pentagram (sometimes known as pentalpha or pentangle) is the shape of a five-pointed star drawn with five straight strokes. The word pentagram comes from the Greek word πεντάγραμμον (pentagrammon), a noun form of πεντάγραμμος (pentagrammos) or πεντέγραμμος (pentegrammos), a word meaning roughly "five-lined" or "five lines"."
More info at the source below. I hope it helps.

It is NOT evil. The only reason I can think of to tattoo it on anyone is to protect them. It calls on the elements earth, wind, water and fire plus it has the fifth--the human spirit. I have drawn it on my car, house and numerous other things to protect them from destruction and theft. I have given my sons amulets with it engraved on the back to protect them. To me a tattoo is something so personal that I wouldn't have it put on a child unless I knew that I wasn't going to be around to protect them and I wanted to make sure they had protection. It would have to be an extreme situation for me to consider a tattoo on a child.
