When you try to use the controller and it doesn't work.
But' usually game controllers don't run out of battery really quick.If the batteries do run out quickly it may be that the batteries are used.The batteries you should get though are Duracell and the Energizer battery brands.Those are the best.

When you press the guide button on your controller (the xbox 360 logo in the center) it will open up your guide where you can see your messages and friends online, etc. On the top left of that screen it will show a battery with how much "juice" your battery still has left in it. The lights around the guide button will also rotate in circles when the battery is going low.

The X-Box controller light in the middle starts to rotate, but if you're playing a game, press... the middle X-Box button, if you look in the top left corner, it tells you the controller battery life.

It's pretty simple, it stops working.
I keep spare batteries nearby as I don't want to interupt a 360 session. =)

First it wont let you interact in the game
Second the light in the middle to turn it on will be off
Last but not least it wont work or do anything

When (a), it stops working, or (b), when it doesn't always seem to respond to the buttons being pressed, or (c) when you find yourself getting closer and closer to the X-Box just to get it to work. That is all.
