According to the octet rule that says that all elements atoms are most stable in the octet structure ; to have 8 electrons in the last orbit, then when we look to the Mg, we find its atomic structure is : k=2, L=8 , M=2, so it loses the two electrons of the L orbit so that it can turn to the octet structure in which state it becomes most stable.
