If I am expecting to get a refund on my taxes, do I need to file an extension if I can't get them done in time?

Yes, you need to file a 4868 (extension) and mail it by 4/16/07.

You just need to file form 4868 for federal income tax return.

As far as State tax return, it depends upon your state. For some states like CA, there is automatic extension for state income tax return if you are getting refund.

Official answer is yes, you do have to file for an extension. If you don't appply for an extension though, and just file late, there won't be any penalty for late filing if you are due a refund.

Yes you can and you have until August 15th to complete them. If for some reason you can't by that time, you could still get a second extention and you have until October 15th but they have to be approve! by the IRS
