Our mayor will not put an ice rink in Memphis because hockey is a rich white boys' sport. (that is a direct quote from the mayor himself) Do you agree?? Why or why not?

Want to know what I think?

No way! I'm a poor white chick, and I love hockey! Your mayor should learn that it's a sport with violence, and lots of people from all walks of life enjoy that part!!

I'll use my freedom of speech to say yes, he should. But that same freedom of speech entitles him to any opinion he cares to spew. It doesn't mean the rest of us aren't highly disgusted and offended by it. I'm sure he knows this and doesn't really care. The sad part is that Obama seems to not have a clue how many people have been affected by this, and how many will refuse to vote for him because of it. He called it a "distraction" today, which seemed to be an attempt to turn a mountain back into a molehill, and that's not happening. Neither of these men seem to understand the depth this has reached in millions of people's minds. A distraction. Right. Like it's nothing serious at all and we're just silly for continuing to see it as an issue. Good luck with that tactic Obama.

Sounds like your redneck mayor is just that. I disagree with him. Hockey has been bestowed in your state of Tennessee since the Predators joined the NHL. They have a good team this year, and a real chance to do damage in the play-offs. The interest in hockey will only increase since Nashville has a professional hockey team. The fact that he labeled it a, "rich white boys' sport" is a racist comment. If he had said a different remark regarding another sport and the African-American race, I guarantee you he would be on the front page of every newspaper in America. If he doesn't want a rink in Memphis, then show him how much interest, if any, exists for the sport of hockey by organizing a petition or showing him proof of substantial interest for ice hockey. Ask him how the Memphis Grizzlies are doing in the NBA? Tell me the introduction of an ice arena for amateur, youth players is a worse idea. It isn't. The mayor is a redneck asshole, who should keep his one dimensional, opinionated comments to himself and out of the public ear. Having a hockey rink will give more jobs to the citizens, make money by having amateur hockey teams, public skating, and only increase the enjoyment of the sport to an area it may not be too popular.

Sounds like your mayor is pretty "uneducated" (I'd use a stronger word if Y!A would let me get away with it) and Hockey has an image problem despite how many people around here deny it.

I suppose there is some truth to the "rich" part although if you REALLY want to do something, like play Hockey, you find a way.

Obviously your mayor has never heard of Grant Fuhr, Jarome Iginla, Anson Carter, etc.

And yes I DO want to know what you think. Just don't get a violation.......

I'm a middle-class black guy, and I'm heading off to the rink to play as soon as I finish this message. That mayor sounds like an idiot. Memphis is a fun town, obviously he has nothing to do with that fact. Besides, they can use the FedEx Forum for hockey, it's not like the Grizzles are selling out any crowds. If I wanted to see something sleep at home and get killed on the road, I'd watch a documentary on possums.

Yes, I'm sure all of those Canadian boys growing up on farms in the middle of nowhere are rich. Dedicated? yes. Rich? no.

Your mayor needs to do some research. What if I were to say your Memphis Grizzlies and Basketball in general is a poor black man's sport?!?!

Whatever.
Go Bolts!!!

No way!!! I mean I am white, but it is stupid to say any sport is just for a certain race. There may not be very many non-white hockey players in the NHL, but the ones that do play are great at what they do. Look at Jerome Iginla, he's not white, and he is amazing. And Georges Laraque, he may not be a bigtime goal scorer, but he is a major inforcer. His team mates know that he has their backs. And don't forget about Grant Fuhr, he is in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Is Memphis so much different than Nashville? It looked like a lot of people were enjoying Playoff Hockey in Music City tonight!

I've played hockey my whole life & it doesn't hurt to have a few bucks to buy state of the art equipment, but with plenty of used gear available on-line, lack of money shouldn't keep anyone off the ice.

first off, i dissagree with your direct rich white boy target. i have personally seen more and more different type of races and players of various ethnic backgrouns playing the game of hockey nowadays. another thing is that i would rather make the effort of getting a young child into hockey than have the kid planted in front of the television playing video games or just plain watching t.v. shows and movies on a constant daily basis. the sport of hockey keeps your mind stimulated and body in physical shape. the other good aspect of playing hockey is that the players spend time practicing and training instead of loafing around and risking a chance of getting in a street gang, turning to drugs and alcohol, commiting crimes or just plain getting into trouble. another positive aspect of building an arena is the arena can be used for baketball games and other sports like arena football or indoor soccer, shows, and other types of entertaing venues. and all of these sporting games and spectacle attractions attract tourists and therefore will help out your cities economy. it is a fact that in canada we are supportive groupwise to help out poor areas in the country by either raising funds, or donating hockey equipement to the less fortunate comunities all accross the country. some towns and cities revolve around the game of hockey and it is this great sport that keeps the comunities together.

That sounds pretty racist to me. Youre mayor is a piece of crap. Think about it...If some Mayor somewhere was like "You cant build basketball courts in town here. All the poor dirty black kids would congregate and bring property value down." everyone would be up in arms. Racism works both ways and he needs to lose his job. Not to mention theres some damn good black hockey players. Iginla, Weeks, and Brashear to name 3 black players at 3 different positions on the ice. What an idiot.
