Researchers have discovered that brain cells which are given lots of 'mental exercise' actually grow larger and fatter! Doing mathematical problems, learning new skills, reading a lot – these are the mental exercises that tax the brain and firm it up.
Not only will the brain cells develop larger, fatter, healthier cells, but to a limited extent, the present cells will attempt to take over some of the work of the work of cells that have died! For example, loss of memory can be slowed or halted and memory can be improved. Reasoning can become sharper and clearer too. Aging itself can't be slowed much but the effects of aging will become less apparent.

Reading allows us to see things from other peoples perspective. It can 'show' us things that we may not see or reveal things we did not know were there. Equally it may help us to understand why certain things are so important to some people.
Meeting someone that has read the same book and enjoyed it is also a lot of fun. It can be a pretty addictive pastime especially if you like a particular authors style.
As for the brain, well, it can at the very least improve your vocabulary, grammar skills and make you a better communicator though that does depend on the books you read.
Apart from that, reading is a lot of fun so why not just enjoy it?

Angel's answer about the brain cells is correct.
In addition, reading opens you up to new ideas. People who read often have a better vocabulary and grammar skills, because the repetition of words affects your memory.
Think of the brain as a muscle. You have to keep doing weight training in order to maintain and grow your musculature. It's truly no different with the brain. You have to keep it stimulated.

It's because it lets us communate with each other without time see... when someone speaks there is only a certain timeframe in which we can hear them. When somehting is written down then no matter how much time has passed you will still be able to see what i wrote down. (unless the peice of paper or this website is destroyed) It's about nothing else.

It's like working out but for your brain, and with light weights. Learning a new language is like lifting heavier weights.
