I seem to remember that way back in the day the North West Territories used to include pretty much all of what is now western Canada. But whether or not Calgary was even around then yet I don't know. It may have been a trading post or some such for the Hudson Bay company or their competitor, whose name escapes me at the moment.

The Northwest Territory was the region lying west of Pennsylvania, north of the Ohio River, east of the Mississippi River, and south of the Great Lakes. Ultimately, five states--Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin--were organized from the territory. The US government and Congressmen would, when it suited their purpose, make outrageous statements about claims to the north of this territory. They might even have claimed the area where Calgary now stands. But Calgary was never realistically part of the Nothwest Territory.
