A patch of moss contains many individual male and female plants called gametophytes. The female gametophytes make eggs in vase-shaped organs near the top of the plant. The male gametophytes make many sperms in oblong organs near the top of the male plants.

When the gametes are mature, the plant needs a slight film of water for fertilization to take place. Just a little dew in the morning is enough. Then the sperms swim through the water to the eggs and fertilize the eggs. The fertilized egg is a zygote and it grows into a sporophyte - right on top of the female gametophyte!
