I just bought 3 goldfish today, and I have a 3 gallon tank. I have had 4 goldfish in a bowl, but, normally I'd only recommend having a couple or one. I would suggest also getting a tank. You can get some with a kit, which includes a pump, some type of rock and fake plants. Mine also came with a light. I got mine at Meijers for about 26 bucks. But, if you dont' want to do that, just put a couple or one into your bowl, and make sure that you float the bag ontop of the water otherwise, your fish will go into shock. Good luck.

none. Gold fish are very dirty creatures that require a well maintained filtration system. In reality no fish should be kept in a bowl but the goldfish is probably the worst off. Each gold fish needs at least 20 gallons to live a happy life, standard fish bowls probably hold about half a gallon. Really nothing should be living in your fish bowl, If you go out of your way you can find some really cool fish that totally blow goldfish out of the water (hehehe!) that will do fine in a smaller ten gallon.

Return the bowl and buy your wonderful boyfriend something that isn't a burden or involve animal abuse. Buying someone a pet as a surprise is giving them responsibility. Especially if it's not something they planned for, it isn't appreciated. Most hobbyists view housing fish in bowls as animal cruelty. ~You asked for advice and it was given: NO fish should be housed in a bowl. Housing fish in bowls leads to suffocation, ammonia burns and poisoning, eventual stunted growth, and a severely reduced lifespan. It's wrong. Goldfish can survive in bowls but they will not thrive, and they will not grow or live to their potential. A year is hardly impressive for a goldfish. They can live well over 25 years. At one year they should be half way to their potential size. For comet goldfish that's about 6 inches. If you don't believe strangers over the internet than please consult a book. Any book published recently by a responsible and knowledgeable fish keeper will say that bowls are not suitable: "Just say no to bowls!: Goldfish should not be kept in bowls. I'm going to repeat that. Goldfish should not be kept in bowls. There are many reasons for this, but the most important is that bowls are too small. A single goldfish should never have less than 20 gallons of water. You might think that one small goldfish in a 20-gallon aquarium makes the tank look a bit bare, but in no time that fish will grow to fill the tank. Goldfish kept in bowls, however will be sickly and will never live long enough to grow anything near full size... Many pet stores wisely advise against the use of bowls or small aquariums for people to use for goldfish, but even if your local shop wills ell you a bowl, don't buy it!" - Aquarium Care of Goldfish by David E. Boruchowitz If you want to get your boyfriend a relatively easy pet than try a betta. They do quite well in about a 5 gallon set up with a full aquarium hood, a gentle filter, and an aquarium heater.

None. A 1" goldfish will be 1" for a few weeks at most. That 1" feeder fish will become a 14-18" long monster and will require a 100 gallon tank. Don't keep a bowl, go ahead and pick up a small tank setup with a filter and heater. It's really worth the extra. Then we can talk about good choices for a small tank, there are plenty of those!

gold fish need alot of room. there is a misconception about them. a rule of thumb for most fish goes every 1 inch of full grown adult size per gallon. so lets say you have a 20 gallon tank that means you only have 20 inches of adult size fish so if you got 4 fish that will grow to about 5 inches then you will be at max. but goldfish on the other hand are different. they produce alot of waste and need alot of room.

Zero. No fish belongs in a fish bowl. A single goldfish needs at least a ten gallon filtered tank to be healthy, and that will have to be upgraded once the fish grows.

usually a good rule of thumb is to go 1 inch of fish per gallon. unfortunately goldfish are very dirty fish which kind of throws this rule out the window. for a bowl with no aeration, one is probably the max. also, remember the fish will grow, so might want to get a big bowl.
