A marriage license is a document that gives permission for the marriage to take place. It does not prove, however, that the marriage actually did take place. If you need to prove your marriage, you will need an official marriage certificate, which will have the official seal of the county where the marriage took place on it. The certificate that the church or chapel gives you the day of your wedding usually does not have this. Hope this helps. Kathy

n some jurisdictions a marriage certificate is the official record that two people have undertaken a marriage ceremony. In some other jurisdictions, a marriage license serves a dual purpose of granting permission for a marriage to take place and then recording the fact that it has done so.

If you are having a wedding, you must purchase a license for the offical (pastor etc) who marries you to sign stating that he actually married you. You take or mail this to the local court house and, usually its the probate judge, will sign a certificate with you and your spouses name and date of marriage and place his seal on it.

You go to the courthouse and get the marriage license prior to marriage. The certificate is signed after the minister or other official "pronounces you man and wife"

THE LICENSE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO TAKE TO THE JUDGE OR PRIEST OR WHATEVER. THIS ALLOWS YOU TO EVEN GET MARRIED. I KNOW WHEN WE GOT OURS, IT WAS VALID FOR LIKE 90 DAYS OR SOMETHING, SO WE HAD 90 DAYS FROM THE TIME WE WERE ISSUED THE LICENSE TO GET MARRIED. IF WE WAITED LONGER THAN 90 DAYS TO DO IT, WE HAD TO GO AND GET ANOTHER ONE. AND START THE PROCESS ALL OVER AGAIN.
THE CERTIFICATE IS PROOF THAT YOU ARE LEGALLY MARRIED.
SO WHEN SOMETHING ASKS FOR PROOF OF MARRIAGE YOU SHOW THE CERTIFICATE.

A marriage license is a "permission slip", if you please, to get married. A marriage certificate is proof that you DID get married.
