P.S. it's for a girl as a middle name and I am considering spelling it differently. I can't think of a good first name to go with it.?

Take note, future parents-- originality is possible without misspelling popular names or making ridiculous ones up!

Persephone is a GREAT choice, and I love you for being familiar with the name's background and knowing the proper pronunciation.

But please please please don't change the spelling. It's not broken; don't fix it!

Just answering honestly. I was given a cat that the previous owner had named Percephini. We called her Sephie most of the time.

This was a cat and it was hard for me to get used to the name. I learned to love her and the different name. But, everytime I took her to the vet, they said what? I can just imagine what a child would go through. I went through a lot of weird looks and questions with her being my cat.

She died at the first of this year, 10 years old with cancer. I miss my little Sephie. But, I personally grew to love her name.

If it's a middle name, wouldn't be too bad. But, I guarantee you people will make fun of it and think you're crazy for naming a child by that name.

When people acted like I was crazy, I said I didn't name her, which I didn't. Best of luck to you.

I for someone reason thought she was a beautiful goddess that was kidnapped by Hades. Didn't know her name meant bringer of destruction. That's another strike against the name.

it's a beautiful name, but as others have said, it might not be appreciated today.

I don't think it means "bringer of destruction," though. here's the story of Persephone according to the mythology as I was told it. I believe wikipedia will back me up on this.

Persephone is the godess of springtime and the daughter of Demeter (godess of the harvest). Hades kidnapped her, although she was miserable with him and refused most food, she did eat 6 pomegranate seeds. Unfortunately, those six seeds bound her to stay with Hades six months out of the year. During these six months, her mother refused to let anything grow (winter), but when she was allowed to return to her mother in the spring, everything went into bloom.

Sounds like more of a girl's name than a boy's name...maybe for a middle name? It's a bit long and difficult to pronounce for a first name, but I think it would be a pretty middle name.

I love the melodic sound of the name Persephone, but I know the average person is going to butcher it into "Percy-phone".

Unfortunately, there is no way to spell it phonetically that would keep the beauty of it intact.

I would use it as a middle name, but not a first.

Another name I feel the same about is Briseis.

Good luck to you and your baby, and I hope this helps! :)

Persephone is a beautiful name. What about Abigail Persephone? Don't spell it any strange way though, that takes the kick out of it.

I don't think it would be good; even for a middle name. But if you really are considering it and need first names, here are a few.

Hayden Persephone
Kaitlyn Persephone
Regan Persephone
Taylor Persephone
Erin Persephone

I knew that sounded familiar. I had to do a research paper on Hades (while reading Oedipus) as a freshmen in high school. I'm not too sure if I like that much though- one because it the Hades' wife's name... the devil's wife... but mostly because people will find it hard to pronounce.
