well it burns 500 calories per day to manufacture enough milk to feed your baby.
so if you eat the same amount as you did before you will lose about 1 pound per week. But if you eat more to compensate, you won't lose anything.
I have found that most women need to diet carefully and exercise to lose their pregnancy weight.

Breast feeding burns almost 1000 calories a day. Yep, it's true. Also, the action of breastfeeding causes your uterus to shrink, shedding those unwanted pounds. Simple, huh?

In theory, you burn more calories. Maybe equivalent to a PB&J sandwich worth of them. In practice you eat more, work out none, and keep thinking calories will melt off :) The mom's I know put on weight while nursing. But the benefits for your child are huge!

It drains about 500 calories out of your body daily so if you do not replenish the claories with food intake, its the same as working out or cutting out 500 calories.
You should maintain a healthy well balanced diet while breastfeeding, because all the extra nutrients gets passed from you to your child. To insure they are getting all their nutritional needs met from just milk, it is extremely important for you to eat enough & properly balanced meals!

You burn energy in creating the milk - I think something like 20 cal per ounce., and lose the cals of the milk - I think something like 20 cal per ounce again - when the milk leaves your body.
