Just about anything created by anyone is propaganda to one extent or another. It's all meant to evoke some emotional and/or intellectual response in the viewer. So to that extent, yeah, the Simpsons is also propaganda. But if you mean "propaganda" in the same spirit as Soviet propaganda or any government propaganda for that matter, then no, it's clearly not. The show is all about humorous references to other things (including itself), and it's fairly indiscriminate about what it makes fun of.

cdf-rom, I almost always enjoy your posts because they're thoughtful, and often I agree with what you say. But in this case, I disagree pretty strongly. There are plenty of TV shows that make specific women characters look idiotic. Think of all the shows with "dumb blondes", for example-- Chrissy on Three's Company or Zsa Zsa Gabor's character from Green Acres. Not to mention that one the things that made Lucille Ball so funny was that she could make fun of herself by playing a not too bright wife who put herself in stupid situations. Rosanne's show made her look like something of a clod as a mother, even though she loved her family. And the Married with Children mom is every bit of the idiot that the dad is; she just had a different angle to her idiocy. I don't think that portraying characters as dumb or inept is something reserved particularly for male or female characters. It happens across the board. And even in the Simpsons, although Homer is the lazy one and Marge tends to work hard for the family, Marge has her failings and moments of idiocy too. And Lisa may be the "over-achiever", while Bart is a screw-up, but Lisa is often only superior in attitude while lacking true compassion, and Bart is an inspired trouble maker. These are all just characters; I think attributing the decline of the American family to Al Bundy & Homer is a bit of a reach.

Simpsons Propaganda

I absolutely LOVE the Simpsons. There's all kinds of propaganda on there. It's really balanced, so you have no idea what Matt Groening thinks about anything, and each of the writers has something to contribute from their own points of view. Basically, they created the show so that everyone or no one would be offended. The first crowd stops watching and the rest of us enjoy!

propaganda for what exactly? Middle Class America?

when the Simpsons were in their early seasons they were a parody of the average American family, but as the episodes went on and on they spiralled into stupidity and celebrity guest voices

If I had to identify one single aspect of the Simpsons that continuously and consistently propagandizes us, it is the presentation of Homer as stupid, lazy and inept.

This has been going on for a generation, now. First there was the Honeymooners, with Jackie Gleason and Art Carney. Ralph (Gleason) was made to appear stupid and opinionated, but there was a good side to the show: at the end of every show he apologized to his wife and she forgave him for whatever boneheaded thing he did, and they made up.

The Honeymooners begat the Flintstones. Since this was a toon, Fred could do more dangerously stupid things than Ralph could, and get into more trouble. At least, Fred and Barney were shown as hard working family men who truly loved their families and acknowledged and provided for their children.

The Flintstones begat All in the Family. Archie Bunker was portrayed as an out-and-out bigot, stubborn and selfish. His wife Edith was the only sensible one. He hurt his daughter by continually criticizing her husband and calling him spiteful names.

All in the Family began Married with Children. There, the husband was shown as a complete and utterly worthless burden on the wife. His children had no respect for him at all.

Following the progression of these popular TV shows over the years, it is easy to see that our young people have fallen in line with the trend, so that men are almost universally regarded as inferior, stupid, morally suspect, troublemakers.

Can you think of a single humorous commercial you have ever seen, where the woman is the object of humor, instead of the man…?

This is in direct proportion to the breakdown of the family in America, because it is one of the driving causes. There is also a purpose to it.

The American people have been trained for nearly forty years to regard men as worthless, husbands and fathers as unnecessary or even harmful.

How then are we supposed to develop faith in a good and loving heavenly Father Who knows what is best for them and came Himself, in the person of His Son, to die so that He would not have to punish us as our sins demand?

The Simpsons are just the tiny tip of a very large iceberg, upon which many, many families have shipwrecked their faith and their lives.
