The first thing I would do, is check for spyware. Spyware will slow it down. Both of these programs are free and safe to use.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Use System Restore and go back to 4/8/07 that will uninstall whatever you installed that slowed it down. You didnt by any chance install IE7 did you. Especially the one optimized for Yahoo. I cant get it to work right with my computers. Could be the culprit.

The first poster doesn't know what he's talking about. First, try a system restore prior to 4/9/07. Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

although DSL isnt the fastest thing out there, there are some other things to try to do in order to up the speed. try adding some more RAM, its relatively cheap, and easy to install. Also, check your task manager upon start up, see what process are running automaticly in the background and close then things down if your not using them. all you really need to be running while surfing is the browser and antivirus stuff. Oh, if you dont know what something is, dont close it down.

Probably some form of adware, spyware, trojan horse, virus...

Disconnect from the network, run your virus software. Get the free adaware software from lavasoft and run that. If all else fails get a program called hijackthis and run it to see what's loading on your machine. Then track down the bad stuff and kill it.

i too had this issue once.
and it was a virus + spyware attack.
try updating ur antivirus to latest definitions, try a complete system scan, and then see.
also you can check the process list( ctrl+alt+delete brings this up in xp) to check if there are any tempxx processess running which are a sure sign of a spyware.

You probably have some ad-ware or spy-ware corrupting your system. Run an ad-ware/spy-ware removal program. You should run an anti-virus program too. If you have the system restore disk you can run that and restore your system to its original settings.

If you are running Mozilla Firefox, go to tools, then Clear Private Data, or just hit Ctrl+Shift+Del. This could be one of the problems, I am not sure though.
