You do not want to flat tow it, as the last person said, rent a towing dolly and put the front wheels on it, then take the drive shaft out for the rear wheels. I just towed a 93 jeep cherokee 4x4 and if you dont take out the rear drive shaft, it can cause damage to the transfer case. It is only two bolts holding it in and takes about five minutes to take it out. Also make sure to have the lighting hooked up on the trailer or at least have the flashers going on the car being towed. Also be sure that the steering wheel is locked and it is strapped on good. Good luck on your move!!

I guess the question you need to ask can the BMW since it is heavier tow the Montero? You gotta to add in the weight of the vehicle and trailer. Also is you have people or stuff in the BMW this reduces the weight it can tow! Also just because something is rated to tow something doesn't mean it will tow it well. Factors like hills, mountains, the wind, trailer sway, etc. Ask the dealer or look at the owners manual. Also isn't the X5 have a kinda short wheelbase? Not what you look for in a stable towing platform.

First thing to ask yourself is can the brakes of the towing vehicle stop both vehicles? Not just a few times but many??? Also, can you safely stop in an emergency situation? I doubt it. U-haul told you no because SUV's of your size have a unsafe history. Best bet is to load your stuff in both vehicles and drive them both. You will actually make better time this way, and will be safer than strapping them together.

See if you can rent a tow dolly to keep the front end off the ground and then pull the driveshaft on the rear wheels. That should help prevent any damage to the transmission and the front end of the towed vehicle.

Ryder is your only other option, if U-haul turned you down.
How about just buying a set of walkie-talkies for $30 and drive them both. You don't have to be in the same car.
Besides, if you are not experienced at pulling this type of combination, you'll be nothing more than an accident waiting to happen. I see this every day!

what do you mean by a large van? It may be in your best interest to rent a auto transport trailer to go with the van. Front wheel drive vehicle, use a car dolly. rear wheel drive, you'll have to remove drive line, attach tow lights, etc.
