Here are the probables: Sehwag: he is an experienced player and a deserving candidate for the captaincy but he is very lay back as a captain and I don't think he is as street mart as Dhoti is. Ghambhir: He can a the captain but I don't know what his repor with the other players.. Can he be a true leader? I don't know for sure. Raina: well, I saw his as a captain but he made many mistakes/blunders so I think he can wait for a couple of years for training. Harbhajan: He is experienced and a fighter too, but there is something about his personality that just doesn't suit with the responsibility of a captain. Yuvraj Singh: He would love to lead the team and he has some qualifications that some others don't but at the moment he is struggling to maintain his position in the team. Any extra burden would hurt his game. Sachin: He is perfect but he himself is unwilling to be the captain. He was the very good captain for Mumbai team but he is not in the race. I think it would work as a great surprize and intimidating to send him for the world cup as the captain.

You cannot say a single player to be the best, it is team effort which leads to victory of a country in sports and cricket is a game which cannot be solely depended upon a single player.
My answer would be the best players are still hidden somewhere in india who are not able to reach the team.

All are good in their own aspects. If they weren't great players, they wouldn't be playing in the team.
However, I believe Sachin and Dravid are great legends. They have experience and talent. Just because they goofed up in 1 series doesn't mean they lack the potential. Look at the runs they have scored. Ponting & Lara are way behind Tendulkar.
In bowling, I would say Kumble and I. Pathan.

If one consider the past records, there is no doubt that Sachin Tendulkar was the best player in Indian cricket till recently. However, in view of his indifferent form in the recent past, he can no longer be considered as a best player. In the present scenarionsider Rahul Dravid as the best player.
