I've heard of rain chains which are used for the downspouts of the gutters. They're very pretty!

It is necessary to use a gutter to direct the water off the roof but the use of downspouts can be replaced with chains. It has a very nice look to it but they are terrible in heavy storms. The idea is to have the water creep its way down the chain but I would recommend sticking with an aluminum gutter. Plus, it is really pretty cheap to have someone come out and install seamless ones.

Anything used to direct water off of a roof is usually called gutters. I have seen actual gutters and also makeshift gutters made of PVC pipe cut lengthwise and mounted at the edge of the roof.
