I have a driveway the leads to my backyard. I want to dig it up and replace with sod. On average, how deep are driveways constructed?

The average depth of a driveway is 4". You can break up the asphalt by renting an electric jack hammer.

Yipes! This could be a problem. First, it was standard practice to put down a soil sterilent before asphalt was put down. These sterilents last YEARS! Second, the asphalt itself may have rendered the soil unsuitable for turf grass. So when the asphalt comes off, so should at least a half foot!!! of dirt underneath. I'd probably take at least three times that amount . Then you rototilll the subsoil to loosen it back up after eons getting squished under automobiles and heavy trucks.

Grass needs a good 18 inches soil depth to grow well....it can struggle along with 8 inches, but the deeper the roots, the stronger the lawn......hence the soil removal.

The bring in good soil before putting down seed or sod. You'll probably have to ammend the soil with compost and nutrients first.

If you plan to rip this up don't try and do it yourself. A better alternative is to hire a bobcat (not sure what they're called in the US) contractor who can dig the asphalt up and cart it away.

It will usually take them an hour or two while it would take you days or weeks.
