Behind Enemy Lines.
It's just gripping drama, whether fully true or merely "based"

A true story from World War II, Hidden in Silence. IT's an AWESOME story about a teenage girl left alone to fend for herself and her little sister during the war. But, at great risk to her life, she takes it upon herself to save Jews. Totally true story. I've done the research, and it wasn't "hollywoodized" very much at all. Not to give spoilers, but yes it has a good ending.

Hands down it has to be 'The Great Escape' because not only is it true, it has a stellar cast who really brought the whole story to life.
And, because it showed the ingenuity of the Allies against the Axis forces in a battle of wills.
Plus, the ending of the movie is both sad and funny.

The Great Escape. Hands down best. Saving Private Ryan was good, but was based in historical events. The Great Escape really happened. Great cast and great soundtrack.

I would agree that "A Bridge Too Far" is very good. Factual and well acted.
But in "Saving Private Ryan" you feel you are in combat. No good guys, no bad guys. Just soldiers, good and bad on both sides.
If you can manage, try to see an old German film called "The Bridge", the story of very young German boys suddenly thrown into war. Also, "Das Boot", a very good German film about submarine warfare
The "Dam Busters" is also very good, old with good acting and splendid flight scenes.
I haven't seen "Flags of our Fathers" or "Letters from Iwo Jima" but comments are very good.

Come and See (1985) A rarely seen Russian film that, by the end, leaves you exhausted. It's part hyper-realism and surrealism. No war film is as intense by the second half.
"Hallucinatory, heartrending, traumatic and uncompromising, such a movie will not to be all tastes. It certainly does not make for relaxing viewing, although those who see it often say it remains with them for years after. "

Zulu, of course! Not only is it quite funny, the story is very good. Although it is a bit propaganda-ish. Michael Caine is brilliant.
Enemy At The Gates is pretty good, too. I like it becuase Jude Law is in it, but it really is an excellent film.
Band Of Brothers isn't a movie, but it's really good too if you have a lot of time.
