Robin Cook, Tess Gerritson, Sue Grafton, Michael Palmer, Eileen Dreyer. I love this site for finding good mysteries and reading them in order.

I recommend P D James. Probably her best for medical and forensic crime is A Shroud for Nightingales (excellent) but I think her crime novels (of whatever kind of crime) are extremely good anyway. I have read all her crime novels, and am sorry now that she is very elderly and possibly unlikely to write any more novels. Very intelligent, very classy.

Sharon Kay Penman is one of my favorites. She writes historical fiction and it is extremely well done. Also check out Umberto Eco and "The Name of the Rose" as well as Peter Tremayne who centers his books on 7th-8th century Ireland.
Finally try Michael Jecks who writes of medieval England

Try Graham Hurley, Michael Connolly.

Carl Hiaasen is a bit odd, but if you want to broaden your mind, and branch into murder/commedy then it's worth trying. You want Skinny Dip first.
