Oh, boy. Let me tell you a story about reading in caps.... My husband (then boyfriend), who has been into Internet gaming for a long time, moved 600 miles away from me for a year. I hadn't spent much time on the Internet back then. So, after he leaves, we do a lot of emailing, right, to talk to each other. He kept calling me up in the evenings all upset and worried and asking if I was alright... I'd say I was fine, why? and he'd tell me you sounded upset on your email... Well, I was baffled for 2-3 months by this behavior until one day he asked me, "Do you realize that when you type in caps your yelling?"

So, no I didn't know that, and I kept putting things in caps to highlight points and be cute and all, and had no idea that when he read them, he thought I was mad and yelling. All that time he thought I was yelling at him over email, and he still stayed with me, and now were married!

I almost always see it as yelling, or at least a raised voice of some sort. I try not to use caps often because I don't like yelling, but if I'm upset or excited, sometimes I do use them.

I know it's commonly understood to be shouting, but with no option for bold or italic typeface, I sometimes use caps simply for emphasis, and I read others' use of caps in the same way.

It is considered yelling or screaming at someone. I got in trouble at work for sending an email in all caps. Peace!

As a Terry Pratchett fan, I tend to view caps as being 'spoken' by the Discworld character, Death.

However, it generally represents shouting on the 'net!

In your example, I read TONE to be an emphasized word.

If the entire post is in caps, I read it as being yelled at.

I don't assume any tone. I use them when I want ONE particular word to stand out so that the person reading my message/answer/whatever understand what the key word is in my long drawn out rambling.

Actually generally I look at it as an important part that needs to be stressed. If the whole thing is in caps, I look at it as it needs to be ignored.

As though the person writing is yelling at me. Or they think I am mentally incapable and I won't get the drift.
