I am looking for a special present that conveys how very special she is and how much I appreciate being married to her. We are a well-educated, middle class couple in our 40s. Any good ideas?

Thanks!

Hire a chef to cook a romantic dinner at your home for just the two of you (you can find these chefs online). It's romanitic, unique, and really sets the tone for more celebration afterwards. Another idea is a tiffany's necklace, a puppy, or just flowers and a beautifully written note.

There is the jewelry and flowers which always do well but i think you are looking for something more meaningful.
Definitely write her a love letter - tell her how she makes you feel and how much these __ years have meant to you.
Is it a special anniversary? Why not renew your vows! You could plan it with her if you think she would want certain things or you can surprise her with your closest friends and family. It should only include those closest to you and no gifts otherwise people with think you are being greedy.
Depends on where you are and what your interests are: you could totally plan an all out evening for the two of you. Pick her up in a limo and take her to dinner. (definitely somewhere romantic) you could take her to the opera or for a walk on the beach. it doesn't have to be a present but an eveing spent making her feel like a godess!
draw her a bubble bath with candles
get her a gift certificate for a spa for facial, manicure, pedicure
get her flowers
get her a pendant with a nice chain, but have it engraved with something really special.
if you get her flowers definitely send them to her work so her co-workers can be jealous
whisk her away for lunch
plan on making her whole day wonderful and meaningful
hope the ideas help! good luck!

Of course women love jewelry, that is always a good option, but I always love it when my hubby makes me something or writes me a poem or plans something for me that is all about me. Another thing I love is that on every anniversary he looks me in the eye and reminds me that " today isnt the only day I love you". He shows true appreciation for me, he tends to buy me diamonds on anniversaries too. Not exquisite fancy expensive ones or anything, but he says he does this because a diamond represents our love, its value is due to its rareity. Both are hard to come buy. My favorite was the diamond tier necklace it looks like 3 raindrops and it is so feminine, but make sure you put the words with it. You can buy things anytime you please but you cant make up for lost time or words you wish you would have said. Good luck and really the necklace is an awesome gift

We are the same age range and I would absolutely love for my husband to plan an evening out, or if the kids are way, a weekend of relaxing. For him to plan it all and then not act like it was a tremendous effort.
There must always be a small box with jewelry inside so she will have a constant memory of how wonderful you are.
You can never go wrong with a gift certificate to a spa though.
Best of luck .

YES, Definitly the trip. I like Misappa's idea with the map and red push pins... start a memory lane of getaways. Get the room with the jacuzzi and schedule her a massage and special pampering during the day. While she is getting that done, you go out and do your thing, then meet up for dinner. The together, apart, together will be great for when you get back to the room. If you're anywhere near southern California, look up the Madonna Inn..
she's a lucky lady!!

For me a special present that would be remembered forever would be a weekend (or weekday) get-away. I don't mean a trip to the Bahamas exactly but a night on the town, dinner, dancing and a dreamy night in a classy hotel with room service in the morning and a rose. If you have kids have them stay with family or friends.

This should be a surprise say nothing to her except pack a bag (or have one of her girlfriends do it for her). My boyfriend did this for me and I will always remember how special he made me feel!!!

The other posts offer nice ideas. I'll give you two more:

I'd say perhaps a treat to a Spa...To make her feel like a queen. (Options could be a massage, sauna, aromatherapy, etc. plus hair/nails/wax...)

Or.....
Why don't you prepare a CD with music she likes?

Preferably music you both listened to when you were dating or went out dancing or have enjoyed together. This isn't so expensive and it shows you put a lot of time and effort into remembering details...(( wink ))

Good luck...and have a wonderful anniversary!

I think I would like my husband to go to build a bear -- and stuff me the cutest brown or white puppy- then bring it home in its box - with either a necklace- a watch - or earrings on its little body somewhere- no diamonds just 14 karat gold- then i would like for him to tell me - that this puppy represents our love to each other because this puppy has 2 hearts inside of it because us being one is all I ever dreamed of and to say how fortunate he has been to have me all these years- and looks forward to getting old together - sitting on the porch swing together - with puppy -(LOVE ) as our guard - (love is his name )
I think you should really do this - You both can even go - you both can stuff the animal you each can put your own red heart in it (they provide those for you) then right after the ladie sews puppy love up and hands it to her - give her the watch or whatever - to me that would be special - I bet she would never think that you would think to do something like that!! And you can tell the grand kids later - they would get a kick out of that one / Good Luck

I think a spa package would be wonderful! I would love a couples package so we could spend the time together. A romantic weekend would be great too. They have all inclusive packages that have massages, swank hotel rooms and dinners! They aren't that expensive. Every time I run across one of those I swoon! I think I would squeal if I got one of those from my hubby! Have fun deciding on something specific to your wives special interests! Happy Anniversary, it's a huge accomplishment!
