First of all, surfing the web is a good idea. Try it to get ideas using terms like quilting, quilt blocks, patchwork. There are SOOOO many quilt block ideas out on the web. Our group made a Healing Quilt for a friend. On 12.5 inch squares, we traced our hands. Some stitched around the hand with embroidery thread; others cut out a hand from another color and ironed it on using fusible web.(Like Underwonder) Still others painted it on with fabric paint. Then they each decorated it with beading, inked-on helpful sayings, little decorations, buttons. She liked it and wrapped it around herself when she got it.

Figure out your color scheme first-make sure your fabrics go along with the others. Then decide on the size of the quilt-so you know how many blocks you need and what size the block should be.
There are a ton of websites with quilt patterns or get a book and look there. I really like Around the Block for quilt patterns as well as online quilterscache.
When I did memory quilts for the 9/11 victims I went there and found blocks with names that caught my eye. One of my favorite is the friendship block-not particularly hard and has a great meaning. Color or novelty fabric work well with this block too.

Without knowing the girl's interests and your skill level, it's hard to suggest something. Are all of you piecing patchwork squares, doing applique, or mixing these?

If she has an interest in, for example, butterflies, do a web search for "butterfly quilt pattern" or use a butterfly fabric in a traditional pattern. You also can go to www.quilterscache.com and look at the list of blocks to see if there is something with an appropriate name.

If the family is religious I would choose a bible verse, print it in nice script onto an iron on transfer, put it on your square and "frame" it with a quilted design of your own choosing. That might be the center square and the rest can frame yours. An uplifting quote or a bible verse would be lovely.

Check out www.quilterscache.com - a wonderful website with hundreds of free patterns you can browse through either by size, name of block or picture. I'm sure you'll find something that will catch your eye and the directions are very easy to follow, even for a beginning quilter.

What colors are being used? Do you know what blocks the others are making?
