I like your idea, Adams, but, FYI, all Clowns are born male and can change into females. Thanks!

You've obviously done some reading on clowns. I'd personally go with the two clowns if you want to breed them - you'll have a much better chance to end up with a mated pair. When one of my original Ocellaris clown pair died, I tried to introduce a replacement (a juvenile) - but the surviving clown killed the potential mate. This won't guarantee the same will happen in your case, but clowns are territorial and semi-aggressive to aggressive depending on the species. From what I've heard from other people that have kept them, plus my own experiences, unless they're introduced together the first will see the second as a rival rather than a mate.

The more natural the setting, the better your odds at getting them to spawn in the tank. Although it's not absolutely necessary for spawning, the clown's natural habitat would include an anemone (which means you'll need the lighting intensity to keep it alive if you choose to get one). The clownfish - anemone symbiosis is pretty specific as to which clownfish and anemones will accept each other. My luck, the clowns I like and the anemones I like don't work together!

I've included a link to a site with some advice on spawning and rearing clownfish and anemone care and clownfish compatibility for you.

I've kept many clowns in my days. Ocellaris are pretty fish and best kept with 2 or more. Also, ocellaris are hardiest and much more easy going that percula clowns.

If you want a great environment, make sure you get the fish when they're young and introduce them to the aquarium at the same time. This way, there won't be much aggressive and you have a good chance of ending up with a mated pair.

It will take about a year for them to mature and start breeding. Patience is everything, and breeding is a lot of fun. I recommend buying the 2 clowns, and post again when you think they might be breeding.

The thing to be sure of before you buy a clown is that they were tank bred. Wild caught don't tend to do as well in tank. Plus there is the environmental side of things to consider. I'd go with the Ocellaris as they are a great fish to start out with.

I say two clowns, because I think its a classier look to have 2 fish of the same type. If you get clowns, you'll be lucky to end up with a male and female pair.

edit---- Oh. Well disregard my last comment then :)

hi
if you put a anemone in with them they will do the rest. make sure one clown is bigger than the other . that way you will get a male and female . if you put the anemone in with them
they will bond in time and become a mated pair check online to see which anemone the clownfish you want will take up with . not all anemones certain clowns will take up with . the bonding will not happen overnight
