You rub them over the surface of your nail instead of over the edge.

file is to remove length like you would with clippers, shape is of course to shape your nails, ( square, squoval, oval, or round) the shine and buff are pretty much used for the same things, when buffing move the file in an X motion buffing is used to remove impurities and prepare the nail for polish, the shine side of the file is to give the nail a natural shine without using a clear polish. also when filing your natural nails always file left corner to center STOP right corner to center NEVER "saw " across the nail this causes hangnails and overtime the nail becomes week hope this helps!

the file edge is a regular file, shape is especially for the edge of the nail-where you might either make your nail more squarish or roundish, etc., the buff edge is to make the growth of your nail stronger(the white part that shows when your nail grows) just rub it on the end of your nail gently. the shine side is for when you are all finished filing your nails. Rub gently the shine side on the face of all your nails and it will make them shinier, keep in mind that your nails must be unpolished in order to shine them.

the order to file with these steps are:
1) file
2) shape
3) buff
4) shine

Starting with the roughest side, you shape the nail, then smooth it with the next side. Take the buffer part and rub it on the top (nail bed) of the nail, then finish with the shine part, rubbing it on the top of each nail. Your clean natural nails will be shiny if you do it right. I have one of those 4 step files and use it every time I do my nails.

File - shortening the nail

Shape - smoothing edges

Buffer #1 = a little rough to smooth out ridges on the tops of your nails

Buffer #2 = smooth & soft to the touch to buff or polish them. This is the last step.

Cut the sides file to shape and buff to help the polish stay on longer.....Use a good polish and a shiner afterwards..
