I know it sounds strange. I have been pulling at my hair and raking my fingers through it so long it's gotten short in some places and thin in others. I don't even realize I'm doing it at times and I try to stop but find myself doing it again and again. What is wrong with me? Is there a name for this? Please help me find an answer so I can stop this compulsion before I'm bald.

its called Trichotillomania, and some people even clasify it as a type of OCD disorder, or at least, simmular to it. its more common amoung woman, triggered by strees or neurochemical imbalance.

Treatment approaches for trichotillomania are highly individualised. A variety of different treatments are mixed and matched to try and find a combination that is most effective for a particular individual at a particular stage of life. many get a combination of medical prescription (i.e. anti-depressants) and psychotherapy (either individual counselling or group therapy).

I went to school with a girl who was bald because of this. She even plucked her eyebrows. It was because of a nervous condition or something. She was the most chipper, happy, and hyper girl I have known, though. However, she had to wear a wig because she had no hair on her head.

If you have the same condition, then I think that you should go and see a doctor. A doctor would be able to direct you in the proper direction to get some help.

Once again, my friend was an extremely nice and outgoing person and was very intelligent. She just could not help herself when it came to this compulsion.

Brushing your hair wet also pulls your hair out. Slowly comb it after washing it. It is an old wives tale that brushing your hair 100 strokes a day is good for it.

Get a short hair cut. Maybe that might help change your tearing/pulling habit.

And, for God' sake, see a doctor! You might have a vitamin deficiency.

I knew a girl in high school with the condition...it can be so damaging to your self esteem and it makes you feel like you are fighting within yourself. Please seek professional counseling of some sort to help you through this and give you proper advice.
