Seems that we should be able to take it off and maybe use a mattress foam pad and sheets on it! Our pillow top is shifting and bunching up after 4years. It is a very $$$Sterns and foster brand.

Yes, if you remove it without damaging the layers above the coils. The pillow top doesn't serve any structural function.

I have never heard of anyone doing this. I guess, if you do not like the pillow top then you could remove it.

With care, I really don't know why not. It depends on how the pillow top is attached.

No, they are not designed for that use. It will either have the inside exposed or you could be sleeping almost directly on the coils. Not a good idea, sorry.
