You were probably told this because when D&D first came out there was a picture of a big, nasty demon on the front cover and the fundamentalist christians of that time saw this and then banned the game because of it's 'obviously' demonic content. They never even opened the book!
Simply put: D&D is designed so that basically good characters work together to overcome evil monsters and find treasure.
D&D is not a pathway to evil anymore then Rock and Roll is!
I think the real reason why the church fought so hard against this game is because in the imaginary worlds of D&D the imaginary characters are 'encouraged' to believe in imaginary gods and goddesses! And they can't have their followers believing in/ worshiping false idols now can they?!
I mean....gimme a frikin break! It's just a game! If someone can't differentiate between reality and fantasy then maybe that someone shouldn't be playing any games?! Hmmmmm.

Dungeons and Dragons is a game - a game that encourages critical thinking, teamwork, and innovative solutions.
It's no more evil than running around out in the back yard when you're six playing Cowboys and Indians (or any other such game of make-believe)... the only difference is that you use dice to determine the outcome of an action, rather than just making it up and hoping the other guy goes along with it.
Those people who continue to vilify D&D are the ones who still haven't looked at what's involved - they haven't done their reseach. They've allowed other people (who also haven't done their research) to define what is and isn't evil... and because the game takes place in a fantasy setting, it must be evil.
If playing make-believe is evil, then by all means, keep away. If learning to solve problems with a team of friends and enjoying yourself while you're doing it is evil, then by all means, keep away.

Because some people are ignorant. It is JUST a game, one using medieval mythology for characters. You pretend you are a knight or a wizard or something similar and you fight monsters and look for treasure. That is pretty much it. How much fun it is depends on your personal tastes and interests, and how creative the people you play with are. It is basically just interactive storytelling. I guarantee you that everyone who thinks it is evil doesn't even know what it really is, or just happened to learn about it from someone who was weird. It is no more evil than Scrabble or Monopoly. That said, there are people out there who think Harry Potter is evil, too. Whatever. If you are in that crowd, then Dungeons and Dragons is not for you. Otherwise, there is nothing evil about it at all. It is JUST A GAME!!!!

Ignorance is the reason. People afraid of kids using their imagination, and who failed to understand the nature of the game.
Everything that happens is descriptive and takes place in the imagination. If you fight a dragon you roll dice, etc. just like a board game to determine if you win or lose, but everything else you do happens in the imagination of you and the other players. There's no real dragon, you just work with the other players to imagine a scenario and you have fun doing it -much like acting. Needless to say you need a capable imagination to play such a game.
One of the "threats" of D&D appears to be that there are no hard and fast rules to the game, as in if you wanted to hurt someone for no reason in the game you could.
In a video game you're generally prevented from being cruel and violent (though Grand Theft Auto and such games might be an exception), but since D&D is played through your imagination, this control isn't there.
Superstitious, small-minded people who fear the deadly threat of "creative thinking" are terrified of this freedom of thinking that the game demanded.
If you're a sick person who likes to hurt people you can play D&D and imagine you're hurting people. If you are a good person who wants to be a hero and help others, you can go on an adventure and destroy the evil undead monsters threatening the local peaceful town. The game itself has nothing evil about it.

No, it's not an evil game. Unless using imagination, creativity, tactics and problem solving skills is evil.
When D&D first came out a bunch of people had a fit because it wasn't "Christian" since some characters were followers of a fictional pantheon and because it had to do with "magic".
What they refused to pay attention to was the fact that it's a game.
D&D is great - we adults play darker adventures of course ('cos we're just ike that) but all our kids play as well. I've noticed that since we started playing regularly again reading scores have gone up, math scores have gone up and chores tend to get done right away because of the fear of being excluded for a session.

It's not an evil game. Only someone who's afraid of supernatural powers, which do not exist, and someone with no experience playing the game would deem it an evil pastime.

For exactly the same reason that uneducated people tell you to stay away from Harry Potter. Because the word "Magic" appears in it at some point thus it MUST be evil.
