1) Really know the product line. i.e. the benefits of each type of foundation, lip color, mascara, etc.

2) Understand the clientele. i.e. age ranges & what they generally seek

3) Look like a MAC representative and be sensitive the nuances at each location. i.e. the clothing, the accessories, the makeup @ the downtown Nordstrom's MAC counter will be bit higher end than the local, teen mall's Macy's counter

4) Do some detective work but be low key & unobtrusive.

- chat up different sales people during the off hours & ask them about how they got the job, how they like it, any tips, etc.

- book a few make overs during some quiet times & observe the sales techniques, ask questions about the products. Ask the person how they got into the business.

- use what you learned & tie it to your current skills for your resume

- apply at each location you desire.

- dress the part at the interview.

- consider working for a competitor to get experience if necessary

*OK, if you're going to a counter rather than a full store, you'll want to apply at the department store's HR, not the counter itself.
*They look for experience! They don't ask to see a makeup application until the second interview, so don't plan on relying on that to impress them. If you don't have a lot of experience, start volunteering. Go on craigslist.org, look in local ads, volunteer for fashion shows, plays, student films, whatever you can. You need those on your resume.
*Have a portfolio.
*MAC has a lot of seminars that teaches you about their product knowledge. They don't cost much and are usually redeemable in product. Find out when the next one is in your area and book a spot.
*When you drop off your resume, they'll be giving you a pop quiz on the company. Read through their website, know the company, and be able to describe their Viva Glam campaign to them.
*Don't tone down your makeup! They're looking for creativity! If you can't do it on yourself, they won't imagine you doing well on customers.
*Even if you're not working at a pro or semi proshop, they're always impressed when you know their full line, whether they carry it or not. Again, their website is your friend.

Hope this helps.
