A Friday occurring on the 13th day of any month is considered to be a day of bad luck in English, German and Portuguese-speaking cultures around the globe. Similar superstitions exist in some other traditions. In Greece and Spain, for example, Tuesday the 13th takes the same role.

Before the 19th century, though the number 13 was considered unlucky, and Friday was considered unlucky, there was no link between them. The first documented mention of a "Friday the 13th" is generally listed as occurring in the early 1900s.

However, documentation aside, many popular stories exist about the origin of the concept:

The Last Supper, with stories that Judas was the thirteenth guest, and that the Crucifixion of Jesus occurred Friday.

That the biblical Eve offered the fruit to Adam on a Friday, and that the slaying of Abel happened on a Friday (though the Bible does not identify the days of the week when these events occurred).

That it started on Friday, October 13, 1307, the date that many Knights Templar were simultaneously arrested in France, by agents of King Philip IV.

One of the most commonly held superstitions in our so-called civilized, educated society is that Friday the 13th is an unlucky day, and since, in this equation, each is held to be unlucky, added together, their sum can only equal double trouble.

The modern basis for the aura that surrounds Friday the 13th stems from Friday October the 13th, 1307. On this date, the Pope of the church in Rome in Conjunction with the King of France, carried out a secret death warrant Against "the Knights Templar". The Templars were terminated as heretics, never again to hold the power that they had held for so long. There Grand Master, Jacques DeMolay, was arrested and before he was killed, was tortured and crucified.

Superstitions swirling around Friday as being lucky or unlucky have existed since ancient times, beginning with the northern nations. Ancient Romans dedicated the sixth day of the week to their beautiful, but vain, goddess Venus, so, when the Norsemen adopted the Roman method of naming days, they naturally adopted Venus as their name for the sixth day of the week. Their closest translation for Venus, Frigg, or Freya, eventually evolved into Friday, a day they considered to be the luckiest day of the week.

From a religious standpoint, Muslims tout Friday as the day Allah created Adam, legend has it that Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, the apple, on a Friday, and later died on a Friday, and Christians consider Friday as the day on which Christ was crucified by the Romans.

The Scandinavian belief that the number 13 signified bad luck sprang from their mythological 12 demigods, who were joined by a 13th demigod, Loki, an evil cruel one, who brought upon humans great misfortune. The number 13, in the Christian faith, is the number of parties at the Last Supper, with the 13th guest at the table being the traitor, Judas. When Christians combine this day and number, the combination can only hold special significance.

The Scandinavians believed that the number 13 was unlucky due to the mythological 12 demigods being joined by a 13th, who brought misfortune upon humans.

From a Christianity perspective, it was believed that the number of guests at the party of the Last Supper was 13, with the 13th guest being Judas, the traitor. Despite modern wisdom, the beliefs of triskaidekaphobes -- those who have an irrational fear of the number 13 -- guide behavior, even today. Case in point, the majority of high rises do not have a 13th floor and many hospitals and hotels do not have a room number 13.

I was watching a program about the Templar Knights and according to the program Friday the 13th is bad luck because it was Friday the 13th when most of the Knights were arrested and that at least for them was bad luck.

It was about a little retarded boy named Jason who drowned in 59 because of the camp counselors neglect. His mother came back to seek revenge against the counselors. During her killing spree, one of the counselors was actually able to kill her in self defense. After that, Jason came back from the dead to avenge his mothers death. There is allot of speculation as to how Jason was able to come back from the dead but none of the movies have addressed it thus far. Then in Jason goes to hell.........oh wait, do you mean the actual day Friday The 13th? I have no idea.

That's a good question because the number 13 represents "completion".
