The British victory over the French in the The French and Indian War in 1763 finally decided which nation was to control North America. This war was actually part of the larger struggle between Great Britain and France. However Great Britain expected the American colonies to help pay for the cost of the war. Also Great Britain tried to impede the settlement west of the Allegheny Mts. All this led to trouble which soon led to the Revolutionary War. I hope this is a help to you.

The 13 New England colonies were still the property of England. In 1763 Great Britain had 56 colonies all over the world. The sun never set on the British empire was once a valid expression.

In 1776 thirteen out of 56 colonies rebelled, those were Britian's north American colonies.
