Neither. The orbit of the earth around the sun is consistent.

However, the axis of the earth is pointing more toward the sun during summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Earth has about a 45-degree lean to its axis. (Probably caused by a celestial impact some billion years ago.) When it leaning toward the sun, it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere. When it is pointing away, it is winter.

The answer may surprise you...it is in fact in the North winter that we are closest to the sun.
