No you don't have to get Norton back there are definitely others. Try NOD32. It is tiny requirement wise and has more ability then Norton or McAfee. Also costs less. Free you can get spy ware (spybot and adware) but I haven't found any good virus protection that is free
For your system moving slow, check the programs you have installed, uninstall what you don't use and do the following in the order it is listed:
1. Uninstall Norton
2. Uninstall any other programs you don't use (if you use office get of works and money)
3. Disk Cleanup
4. Disk DeFrag
Then make sure to do your updates for Microsoft, Windows and any other programs that need them. Once that is done you will see a difference in your computer unless the specs are to low for todays programs.
Generally good specs for a computer today are 2.+ gig processer P3 512mgs RAM and 40gig hard drive. Duo core and 1gig or more of RAM is the best

You can try Avg or Avast free antivirus, found at www.download.com.
The speed of your pc is often determined by your processor and the amount and speed of your ram, but some programs will slow it down quite a bit, and I've heard that before about Norton.

i have a mac so no need for that stuff lol if it runs slow clean up the hard drive get more RAM, also open the desktop case or tower and remove as much dirt as possible and make sure the cooling fan is not covered in dirt. use a soft brush like an unused paintbrush or an air compressor

AVG is free, but I do recommend purchasing an antivirus. To speed up your computer, go to start, run, type in msconfig, click ok. On the top right, click startup, click disable all, click apply, click close, then restart your computer. If you do this, no antivirus software will be running. If you want antivirus running, install one that is not expired.

Get AVG, it's free and works very well. Norton is cumbersome and buggy and really doesn't work that well.
