A face to face sincere apology is best. The apology should include words like "I'm sorry, please forgive me". Be honest, open, upfront, explain why things were said and done. And offer the promise to not repeat the words or acts that hurt.

Being sincere, and saying why you are sorry. If you recognize what you did wrong, the other person will realize that you are sincere with your apology instead of offering one in general just to get out of the dog house!
