Hi there. I don't know much about computers but would the above upgrade make my new PC noticeably faster. Is it expensive to do? Is it difficult? Thanks.

Any additional RAM you install will help the performance of any computer. It will speed up operations. As far as being expensive, that will depend on the RAM that you purchase for it. A 512MB stick shouldn't be that expensive, but you need to check Sony's Website for the type of RAM that your system uses. DDR or DDR2 as well as speed. On the Sony site you should also be able to find the Removal and Installation manual (user's manual) in pdf format that will show you where to install the RAM at. It might be as simple as opening a little cover on the bottom or as difficult as removing the keyboard to get to the slot. Either way, you should be able to accomplish it as long as you are careful. Hope this helps...

It should provide you with a decent boost, though it will all depend on your usage and how many programs you are running in the background.

As far as cost goes, you can find a 512 stick of SODIMM memory for about $80. Probably even cheaper if you get it when it on rebate from some of the bigger electronics stores.

Installation is easier than pie, just open the little cover that says "Ram" on the bottom of the laptop, and slide the new stick in and click it down so it is flush like the other stick.

That is, of course, if you have two memory slots on the bottom. Sony is usually pretty good about keeping memory expansion slots on the bottom of the laptop.

Well upgrading ram will improve some aspects of the computer but with out the full list of specs there is no way to tell how much. There may be other places that the money would make bigger improvements. Laptop ram is more expensive than most desktop ram and a little harder to install. You may have to take the whole thing apart to do it or you may just need to remove one screw. Also the 512mb that is in it could be one stick or two sticks and that changes what you want to do. I would take it to someplace to have this done instead of trying to do it yourself.

If you are running low on RAM, yes it will make it much faster. It is a good idea anyway. It is very easy to do and not very expensive (depending on what type of RAM you need). Go to http://www.crucial.com to see what RAM you need and you can either buy it from them or go to http://www.tigerdirect.com like I do.

If you buy the chip and install it yourself it should not be expensive. You may see a performance gain. 512 is usually enough unless you are running vista.
