I live in chicago and all of my sponges smell of mold for no good reason. I treat them the same way I have treated all the others, cleaning, washing, bleaching. Nothing seems to help. Any ideas? I have tap water. I am at a loss. Could it just be a bad batch of sponges as they all came in the same 8 pack.

Toss them out and get new ones. It's not worth the hassle to worry over them. Good luck

I agree with the first answer put the sponges in the microwave real wet with a bit of dish soap then put in micro for about 2 minutes maybe longer. I heard on tv the other day 2 minutes is enough I would think 5 would be too long unless it is more than one sponge. Be careful taking it out of the micro, the sponge is real hot. I do it all the time. I use sponges all the time in the kitchen I like them better that a dish rag.

Microwave the very wet sponge for two minutes daily. Or toss it in the dishwasher without added bleach; your dishwasher detergent already had bleach in it and adding more it not good for the dishwasher. If it doesn’t work, just buy new sponges. Sounds like they’re not drying all the way, so the mold builds up quick.

If you have a microwave then you could try getting them very wet (almost dripping) and put them in the microwave for 5 minutes. If this doesn't work try again with a water bleach mix and microwave again. If it still smells throw it out and buy a new pack of sponges. Good luck!

I'm not sure how you bleached yours. I just pour pure Clorox (or generic) on them. After a few minutes I put them in the dish water so the Clorox will disinfect the dishes too. If this doesn't work, or even if it does, try using the cellulose sponges with the Scotchbrite backs.

Sponges are not eternal.....they should be replaced every month. Even if you bleach or steam them in the microwave, replace them often.
