compatable mediaplayer for windowsvistor?

i have a new pc with windows vistor but the mediaplayer
will not play downloaded film or video can anyone help

I have XP and use AlShow, it's free and works very nicely.

I'm not totally sure if it works for Vista or not, but it's worth a shot:

Do you have the correct codec like DivX installed. Probably not especially if its a new computer as I had the similar problem when I downloaded from youtube.
