owners know they need veterinary treatment, but spend their time asking questions on here? If you need to ask, you know there's a problem. Anyone else get up upset that animals are suffering because their owners are too tight to get to the vet?

Mermaid - You will note that I took my dog to the vet first and then asked others how long their dog took to improve. I wouldn't leave my dog to suffer while I asked the question and got replies! Exactly what I am trying to get over.

Our Kid - I didn't say you were tight - you did the right thing and went to the vet when you knew there was a problem. Read the question please.

I couldn't possibly agree more.
I've posted a couple of times on this subject, in the desperate attempt to make people realise that when your animal is ill - or even if you just suspect it is - Yahoo Answers is NOT the place to go!
This is the place for ideas for pets names, support when you're grieving, sharing of experiences, stuff like that. I agree that asking for opinions is OK - but NOT when the opinion is on whether or not you should fork out when your dog is seriously ill!
This subject often results in the debate as to whether or not you should have a pet if you can't afford it. I guess this is a matter of opinion - I mine is that NO you shouldn't. It's just not fair on the animal, and I think it's irresponsible.
The words 'i can't afford the vet' upset me alot. Haven't people HEARD of pet insurance? I assume the majority of people wouldn't ask for home remedies if their child had severe vomiting and diarrhoea? Still I suppose you never know with some people.
This subject is the reason I signed up to Yahoo in the first place.

I think it is combination of things. One the most obvious would be financial concerns. Not everyone can afford an vet office visit so they come here hoping to find out it is not serious problem or there is a home remedy. Granted some folks are just cheap, but for some folks it is a question of putting food on the table or paying rent verses taking the pet to the doctor. I remember eating mac+cheese and top ramen for over month and heating the house with fire wood scavenged from a friend's property to pay the vet bill for the family dog. But some of these people might already be at this stage and just cannot find the money.
Another thing I have seen in humans and their own health problems is denial. One of jokes we use have in the ER was that the first symptom of a heart attack is denial. They attribute the chest pain to something else like indigestion. I think some owners are the same with their pets. They are still in denial when they come here but have developed a worry that it might be more, but need convincing.
Another but probably less common reason is how dependent our society has become to the inter-net. Some folks are so web oriented, they have to look into it on the net before they pickup a phone or leave the house.

like everything these days vets are expensive and i think most people are just asking other people if they have had the same problem to see if there is a cheaper way. to see a vet before any treatment for a dog is about £20 then you have to add the medication. this can become quiet expensive if the problem can just be cured with sodacream for example.
if these people didnt care i doubt they would ask for peoples advice and ignoe the problem.
however some people on here do however ask stupid questions like should i have my dog put down cause he cant move and is howling in pain. that is a stupid question.
think 90% are geniune and just require advice.

I think in general it does piss me off, but we have to be careful not to jump to conclusions either. Timewise, it may be midnight in the timezone when the person is asking and if its probly soemthign that can wait until morning but coming onto yahoo!A helps ease the mind a bit. or whatever you know.
I mean i'm not saying that all of them are like this and yes some people probly just don't want to fork over the $$ for the vet bills and those people can just rot in hell for all I care, but lets try to give people the benifit of the doubt :)

I think we're in agreement...every answer so far has condemned owners of suffering pets. I also object to fashionable young ladies who ask what kind of tiny dog they should get to carry around as a bio-accessory without any thought to really caring for the animal.
If you're going to have a pet, at least give it basic care and attention and get it spayed or neutered.

No. The very fact they are posting a question shows they are concerned. Just as many of us do if we have a problem ourselves. The ones you should be bothered about are those who do nothing at all. Perhaps they are seeking reassurance or other viewpoints before going to the vet. Hopefully.
I note that you've asked a question about your own dog's ailment. The others are doing the same thing.

If the animal is suffering and the owner knows it, yes by all means, it's very upsetting. If you take in animals you've also made a commitment for it's health and welfare.

Absolutely. I think many people do not fully consider the expense of caring for an animal when they adopt. If you cannot afford to pay vet bills, then you can't afford a pet.

we got our dog 2 years ago from a dogs home he cost a lot of money, he also spent a lot of time at the vets for sometime after. it also cost us a lot of money to bring across to Spain when we moved here. recently his last visit to the vets was his last again costing a lot of money. granted it was a week or there abouts after realizing there was a problem with him but we did the right thing for him. again we spent a lot of money on his buriel. so dont tell me i was tight
