x² = 11x - 10

x² - 11x = 11x - 10 - 11x

x² - 11x = - 10

x² - 11x + 10 = - 10 + 10

x² - 11x + 10 = 0

x² - x - 10x + 10

x (x - 1) - 10( x - 1)

(x - 10)(x - 1))

- - - - - - - - -s-

x^2=11x-10
x^2 - 11x + 10 = 0

now to factor this, get your "target numbers"; the first found by multiplying the number in front of the first and third term (1 times 10) and the second is the number in front of the second term (-11)

now find two numbers that multiply to be the first target and add to be the second:

__ x __ = 10
__ + __ = -11

-10 and -1 are the answers, so substitute -10x and -1x for the middle term:

x^2 - 10x - 1x + 10

now factor the left and right sides:

(x^2 - 10x) + (-1x + 10)
x(x - 10) + -1(x - 10)

now since the two numbers in the parenthesis are equal, you can multiply the numbers inside the parenthesis by the numbers outside the parenthesis:

(x - 10)(x - 1)

now remember this whole thing is equal to zero:

(x - 10)(x - 1) = 0

so when you have to numbers multiplied together to equal 0, one side has to be zero, so there will be two answers to this problem:

x - 10 = 0..............x - 1 = 0
x = 10...................x = 1

simplify to one side: x^2 - 11x + 10 = 0
factor out: (x - 10)(x - 1) = 0
solve for x: x = 10 or x = 1
