I know they're usually covered in ads, but do they really make any money?

I'd say yes or they wouldn't continue to proliferate or even exist. I -have- discovered that a lot of them. the lesser knowns, are "scrapers", grabbing whatever personal information they can from your and the recipient's machines. I even caught one, forget which one, trying to push GAIN spyware onto my machine.
In particular I wouldn't let t hem download any ActiveX or other programs to your computer.

I would say that if you want to send E-cards, to stick with the well known names; they're using them as advertisements and aren't as likely to be trying to do anything more covert that put a cookie on your computer.
Personally I've quit using them and just make my own instead using PaintShop Pro. It's more fun and more of a personal touch anyway and there is always lots of photos/images etc. around the 'net to use.

Yes...most ecard sites have some free cards, but most you can only access if you have a paid member account. That is how they make most of their money...the ads also add more income.
