The exact meaning of Desi is a local or native person.
The suprising thing is that "desi" is recognised as an english word derived from hindi. It isn't slang. The use of this word need not be termed as an offence as the meaning is clear and unabusive.

Desi actually means person from your own country/land
as Des literally means "country/land"
and so desi is someone who belongs to the same homeland as yours or in your case even if they're not born in the same country but their ancestors have..
and btw no its not slang, though now it may have been added to a slang dictionary but originally it wasnt..

American Indians are "Pardesi Indians"..Naturally they call other Indians as "Desi".
