Actually it depends on the person. I climbed it once and I was drinking and smoking on the way up. You should buy that walking stick so you can get those burned in stamps at each station. There are many elderly climbing the mountain also. Before you get to the top a line starts to form. It took a while to climb but it was fun.

I climbed it last year. I was already training and working out on a regular basis. 6 Months prior to our climb my wife and I increased our workout schedules. I basically tried to increase my overall endurance levels. Everyone has different levels of fitness, but the main point is to make sure you can handle about 8 hours of aerobic and heavy muscular activity. There are plenty of chances to rest along the way, so you do not have to climb for 8 hours straight, you can climb stop and rest and then continue until you reach the top. Walking down is also tough on the legs. We had one person who trained very little before climbing and he had a really hard time, especially as the climb took us into thinner air.
To answer your question, you need to be in a medium to advanced level of physical fitness.
Besides being in shape, you need the right equipment and you need to be prepared incase the weather goes foul. I suggest to do some more research on Wikipedia about climbing Mt. Fuji.

Just try..if you can't make it..just stop and take it as experience..
I didn't have the chance to climb Mt. Fuji but the other mountains.. my first time and I made it with our guide, this is their hobbies so I tried it and it was a great experience..I guess there are stops that you can rest or quit. Don't take much stuffs on your backpack and get yourself a walking stick, an experienced guide is a blessing if you have your first try.
I never thought I would be part of this, but when you reach the top..it is really awesome.

You don't need to be fit at all. My friend's dad climbed Mt. Fuji for his 60th birthday last year.

Keep in mind that if you drive to the highest point possible, it'll be about 6 hours each way. I am not in great shape but I was able to do it. Pace yourself, bring water and some snacks, and enjoy the view from the top! Good luck.

The elderly do it, so can you. Just pace yourself, wear good boots and use a hiking stick. If the weather is crap, then give it a pass.
