Is it possible to score optimum in GMAT witout taking any course?

I've taken the SAT twice, the GREs three times and the GMAT once. I've never prepared and have always done well.

I doubt that studying would have brought my 790 GRE Math score up to an 800.

On the other hand, places like Kaplan claim to be able to help people improve their scores.

My advice is to take a sample GMAT score. If you scoree 700 or above, don't bother with a course. If you score lower, there is room for improvement.

Yes, there are many books that go over the material and have practice tests. If you have a decent background in math and english, then you can do it on your own. What matters is how much time and effort you put into it. I took it to get into a local state school and did not need a really high score. I studied about 30 hours total and scored a 570 which was in the 61st percentile. I got into my program with no problem and got 4 classes waived. If you want to score really high like 680+, I think you would need to devote a minimum of 90 hours of practice unless you're a genius
