It has nothing to do with insecurity. Swimmers wear drag suits specifically to create drag (hence the name...) Creating drag in practice forces them to work harder to obtain the same results. Thus in a meet they can lose the drag suit, use the same amount of energy and swim faster. It's like shaving before nationals, you let the hair grow all season to create drag and shave the night before the big meet to make you more aerodynamic. Same with wearing a cap.

if you have drag during practice you have to work harder. When you dive in for a race without a drag suit then you will think to yourself wow this is a lot easier then with my drag suit. but you should be working just as hard as you would be with a drag suit and you may go faster. not sure if that made much sense but that is the reason. its like the same reason why guys dont wear caps during practice...cuz their hair produces drag so they have to work harder. Then when they have a cap they go faster cuz they think wow this is easy.. its more a pyscological thing in my opinion

Do not where the drag suit at the meet!!!! . It will drasitically reduce your time, the drag suit is to teach you to swim faster , so that when you do go to a meet you swim faster. If you want to do good in the swim meet you will where a normal speedo. Also it might make you seem cocky.

well, one issue is insecurity, but the other reason is because they use it to create resistance and drag (that's why its called a drag suit). the harder it is to pull yourself through the water at practice, the harder you have to work. therefore, you get stronger for the meets and are able to swim faster in the long run.

for drag, it makes them go faster in actual races when they only wear speedos

It feels uncomfortable knowing that everyone is checking your stuff, anyway I do use the Speedo's bikinis, its gives you less resistance to water, and so is easier to slide on the water
