people make jokes about them being stupid? I am of Polish descent most people from Poland that I have met are really smart. I'm just curious.

I've always wondered that myself. I even know a Polish woman who is a scientist! I once heard that one reason why they're often picked on is because they have often been the victims of various peoples, such as the Russians, the Germans, the Swedes, and the Austrians.

Just for reference, for the submitter who has never heard one, Polish jokes are typically heard in areas where there are lots of Polish people. Here's a good one:
Pollock: Did you hear our Polish space program is sending a man to the sun?
American: No. Won't he burn up?
Pollock: No, stupid! We're going at night!

I've never heard a Polish jOKe. Never thought of them as stupid. Feel very bad for Polish Jews in WWII. So I wouldn't joke about this sort of thing. But if your ok with it maybe someone out there knows.

It has to have sprung from immigrants from poland coming to the US, not speaking english well/understanding US customs and being branded as dumb. Italians went through something similar. My all time favorite film director was polish (Kieslowski) and I think, except for his smoking, his intelligence matched up well with a vast majority of americans.
