To me physically speaking the dove and pigeon are but the same bird,.. what scientific differences are there that differentiate the two? ie, when is a dove not a dove, and when is a pigeon not a pigeon?

All doves and pigeons are descendended from the Rock Dove. Through man's selected breeding over many years, the homing pigeon evolved. Scientifically though, doves and pigeons are the same (Columbia liva). The main visual difference between them is size. Doves are generally sleeker and smaller with pointed tails - while pigeons are larger and stockier with rounded tails. The popular white doves released at various celebrations are billed as 'dove' releases, but ethical companies always use white homing pigeons, as they return home.

A city pigeon is also known as a rock dove. Most of the doves we see in N America are mourning doves but there are numerous pigeons and doves around all belonging to the family Columbidae. Usually the larger birds are called pigeons and the smaller ones are doves.

Pigeon and dove are two names for the same bird. The domestic and feral pigeons around the world, including the homing pigeons, are descended from rock doves/pigeons. There are many other species of pigeon in the world, some are called doves, some are called pigeons, some are called both.

The pigeons in London's Trafalguar Square are actually Rock Doves. I can't say if this is the case generally.
