I have been working towards graduating on time from college - this may - and I will be finished with my BA in english adn a minor in Comparative Literature - but I recently found out about a minor in Journalism that I can complete in another semester but that would mean not graduating "on time". What should I do - I was planning on pursuing my masters in English starting in the fall as well and am looking for jobs now at the same time - It is becoming overwhelming? What should I do? Get job and pursue the masters, do the journalism and find a part time job for one more semester and then do the masters? - anyone ever in this situation? whats more important graduating on time and just starting to work somewhere or finishing school then working? I need guidance

Well, what would the minor do for you? Would it really make a difference in getting the job you want? Would graduate schools care? Most likely not. I would be highly surprised if they did. Instead, I would save the money and graduate sooner. People care about having a degree, but rarely about specifics like minors, unless they lead to a specific skill or certification.

I would certainly prefer completing my studies and then take up a job. This is out of experience am advicing because have great regrets of not being able to do my masters after taking up a job. Since then always encourage people to study as much is required to keep up to the competitive work environment and once you are fully equipped with all degrees then explore job opportunities. From your question it appears you are a fresher so once you take up job there are high chances that you might neglect ur studies because there is a focus shift towards work and the urge to prove urself at work. Unless ur instict for studies is very strong alongwith a job then u can plan to take up either part-time or full time work.

Good luck for your future endeavours

Journalism is a great major because it teaches you to write lilke people read in real life. Also it gives you something practical to do if you can write. I guess the question is what are you going to do with your masters in English? Teach? If so and you want to do so at the high school level the journalism will come in VERY handy in getting jobs and sponsoring those yearbooks and student newspapers.

I would go for it!

If you are worried about graduating on time, don't, especially given your situation. If you want another minor in journalism, go get it. It will only help you with graduate school which will subsequently help you with getting a job when its all said and done.

"Graduating on time" is an empty phrase.
What is more important, graduating"on time" or getting out of college what wou want to get out of college? Ask yourself...suddenlyi it's 5 years from now. What shouldI have done??

Good luck.
