I was talking to a friend today and she has 2 children with autism. I ahve a child who has mild autisic feature and I began to think - could two moms open a school for children to come to to have a coach and work on 3 goals at a time to learn better social habits and try to better mainstream themselves more for socializing within the family, school and later on work. Can each child be assigned a coach to work on 3 goals 2x a week for 2 hours each time? Work individually and then some time to do a circle like time to practice group social skills. Is this a mode that can be used to help our children? I am social worker and my friend is a speech pathologist and we are parents. There isnt anything like this in our area. Just brainstorming here - so please send my your feedback about this very basic and preliminary idea.

I think it depends on the child. My son is 6, and was diagnosed with classic autism just after he turned 2. At that time he literally lived in his own world. He basically stayed in his own room, and hardly even interacted with us, let alone anyone outside his family. When he went somewhere in public, such as preschool, he would stay in a corner, under a table, or wander around on the outskirts. After years of intensive intervention, he has turned into a social butterfly in the sense that he loves people. He wants to be around someone all the time. He is the polar opposite of what he was. But he still has MANY social skills problems. Just because he is social, doesn't mean he knows how to socialize. He needs constant prompts on how to act appropriately in social situations. The thing to remember is that no 2 kids with this disorder are the same, which is why it is so hard to treat. I have a close friend whose daughter is 1 month older than my son, and has received the exact same services for the exact same amount of time as my son, and they have not had the same success that we have. We were very lucky. Just stick with it. If he prefers you, and responds to you, you might get better results from him than others in his life. Ask his parents what you should do in specific situations. They will probably be glad of any help you might be able to offer!

If you want to help autistic children learn, you should have someone who is very high functioning autistic teach them some of the lessons they learned and that were hard for them.

I have Asperger's, and I'd say teach them about empathy. People can actually feel other people's emotions so much like their own that they get mad at someone they love if they hurt themselves(such as not wear a coat when it is very cold, etc.)

Also, teach them about "white" lies. People sometimes lie to protect other's feelings, even some of the most honest people do.

If someone is spending a lot of time with you, that means they want to be your friend. A friend doesn't have to be someone you go to their house and spend time with all the time. They could be friendly acquaintances.

If you have the appropriate qualifications, awareness to recent techniques for treatment and a rolodex full of rich clients its possible. There are so many schools out here that are opened by parents as they were distraut by the lack of appropriate schools to treat their kids. One is Magnolia Talk Program. You can websearch and try to gather details. There is the Rapid Prompting method started by Soma. If you do your research it will pave way to a clearer understanding of what you need, when you need and how to go about it.

The term you are looking for is charter school. Florida has them. You get funding for the students who choose to come to your school rather than attend regular public schools. There are certain rules, but charter schools are sort of like free private schools.
