Positive: more people were working in cities where the factories were located so that there was money to buy food (since a family could not grow food in the city) Prior to the opening of factories, most peeps lived rurally and grew their food.
Positive: kids were being educated if there was enough extra money to afford it. More education leads to more progress, and often to better all-around health

Negative: Pollution of the factories areas - no one knew that coal burning industry would hurt the lungs
Negative: Pollution of the rivers and streams since the wastes of the factories was merely 'washed away' and they did not know the later impact this would have.
