They are dehumanizing, both to those who are incarcerated, and to those who are the keepers. Dehumanized people become objects, and this is bad for the conscience of the individual and the conscience of the nation.

It basically allows large crime networks to form from all the convicted criminals being in a small space and then meeting up when they get out, and i've heard that in the UK the cost of keeping a single prisoner for one night could book you into a decent hotel

They keep criminals off the street, which is good. They keep money out of your pocket, however, which is bad. They are a catch-22. If you don't have them, you'll probably get robbed of all your belongings. If you do have them, you're too poor paying for them to have anything worth robbing.
